Kerry,

  Yes, actually I believe many do reinforce the landing gear truss area. Even Gerry's prototype N70BD has this area heavily reinforced beyond the old Duce drawings. N70BD has a heavy steel spanner underneath the gear tying both gears together all the way from side to side. It still utilizes the single bolts however but by using the two single gear bolts through this heavy steel plate it spreads the load and changes the stress concern you are mentioning.

 Austin can probably tell way more about this but it appears from what I have read that the gear truss itself is the weak point, not so much the single bolt in tension. It seems the truss can get tweaked on a hard landing.

If you look in the photo section at Austin's superdeuce construction pictures you will see his improved gear design. I suspect you will find that more appealing that the original setup like you and I both have.
